FIRST ICE on BARNUM POND

Black ice will form on Barnum Pond
tonight, I feel quite sure;

For even as I stop to watch
a flaming sunset sky,

I notice its reflections lie
much stiller near the shore

Where just a skim of tissue-thin
ice crystals now have formed,

As frigid air writes promises
of what it has in store.
